Child Car SeatHertfordshire County Council is joining forces with the Welwyn Garden City branch of John Lewis to carry out free safety checks on children's car seats.
A recent batch of 200 checks found 70% needed some adjustment.
Stuart Pile, Executive Member for Highways and Transport, said: "Parents at recent checks were shocked to find that the child car seats they thought they had fitted correctly were in fact unsafe. To be absolutely certain that your child’s car seat is fitted correctly why not come along and ask trained staff to check it for you?"
Faults found at recent checks included seats not being fitted correctly, or being too loose, plus some seats were not compatible with the car, while others were not appropriate for the age and weight of the child.
The checks will be held on:
• Monday September 6: 10am to 2pm, Asda supermarket car park, Hatfield
• Tuesday September 7: 9am to 12pm, Waitrose supermarket car park, Welwyn Garden City
• Tuesday September 7: 1pm to 4pm, Morrisons supermarket car park, Welwyn Garden City
• Wednesday September 8: 10am to 2pm, Tesco supermarket car park, Hertford
There is no need to make an appointment and parents are also welcome to come along to ask for information regarding their children’s safety in the car.
In the event of bad weather or for information about the checks, please call Hertfordshire County Council's Road Safety Unit on 01992 556814.
