The Lister Hospital's investigating after the man died 2 days after they discharged him.
A Hertfordshire man has died at the Lister hospital from suspected blood poisoning after reportedly stepping on a sea urchin while on holiday in Greece.
Mitchell Carey, 43, who's from Gun Road in Knebworth is thought to have contracted an infection after stepping on one of the sea creatures.
When he got back from Greece, he told pals he felt unwell and was taken to Lister Hospital in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, on August 16.
But staff discharged him soon after, reportedly diagnosing food poisoning.
His condition deteriorated rapidly and he was rushed back to hospital the next day after his family called 999.
He died on August 18 from multiple organ failure.
Mr Carey was the son-in-law of former footballer and TV pundit Bob Wilson.
He had been married to Mr Wilson's daughter Anna but was widowed when she died of a rare form of cancer in 1998, just before her 32nd birthday.
A spokeswoman for East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust said: "Our deepest sympathies are with Mr Carey's family.
"While an investigation gets under way it does appear that Mr Carey was given the appropriate course of treatment while at our A&E department.
"Sadly his condition worsened dramatically and on his admission, staff at the Lister Hospital did everything they could to save his life."
While there are some species of poisonous sea urchins, most people unlucky enough to step on one will just experience a sharp pain which can last for a couple of days.
However, there is a danger that in rare cases bacteria from the creature's spines can lodge in the wound causing blood poising, also known as septicaemia.
