New group for girls with special needs says it's the only one in Hertfordshire - and maybe the UK.
What could be the first special needs girl guides unit in the UK has started up Welwyn Garden City.
It's specifically for girls with special needs - so they can do what everyone else in their age group is doing, but at an earlier time. Laura Hall who started the group has a daughter with special needs and says it's often difficult for children to stay awake late in the evening when traditional groups meet.
"Once you get to guides it's awkward for parents to try and force their children to stay awake! As far as we know, we're the only group like this in Hertfordshire, maybe even the UK."
Laura told Jack FM she hopes they'll be able to develop activities which can be used across the country:
"At the moment we're working on badges that any guides would do. But in the future we're hoping to create badges with syllabuses which are specifically for our girls and eventually roll it out for girls within guides that have special needs and can't achieve what's expected on a normal badge."
The group is held in the Lakeside School in the town and they're looking for volunteers to help out.
