Stevenage Rape Rumours Dismissed

Herts Police reassure public after text messages spread reports of two rapes

Hertfordshire Police are dismissing rumours of two rapes in Stevenage in as many days.

A Jack FM listener contacted us this morning to tell us about the text messages that said 2 rapes had happened in the Six Hills Way area of the town on two consecutive nights.

But Police say no such incidents have happened.

DCI Glen Channer from the Sexual Offences Investigation Team said: "Understandably these messages have caused some serious concern within the local community but residents should be reassured that no such incidents have occurred.

"Officers had been investigating a report or a robbery and assault on a woman in the area in the early hours of Thursday morning however these investigations have proved negative and no crimes have occurred.

"I would like to take this opportunity to remind people to think about the importance of their personal safety on nights out. We would advise people always to plan ahead."

Hertfordshire Constabulary offers the following advice:

- Buddy up - if you go out with a group of friends make sure you go home with them too. Plan how you will get home before you go out. Take the number of a reputable taxi company with you.

- Keep some extra cash in a separate place in case your wallet or purse is stolen (for phone calls or a taxi)

- Avoid going home or getting a lift with someone you've just met (especially if they've been drinking alcohol or using drugs)

- If you must walk home - walk in groups and not on your own. Keep to well-lit areas and main roads avoiding shortcuts, alleys or parks.

- Make use of the taxi marshals at the Leisure Park.
